What Is the Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment?
The Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment measures selected knowledge and skills from MTH1W, Ontario’s de-streamed Grade 9 mathematics course. It is administered online to Grade 9 students taking MTH1W, organized into Session A and Session B, each about 60 minutes, using a multi-stage computer-adaptive format. Questions fall into three categories: Knowledge and Understanding, Application, and Thinking. Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, the result counts for 20% of a student’s final MTH1W mark.
Because the assessment reflects the MTH1W curriculum rather than a separate body of content, preparation works best when it reinforces the same knowledge and skills taught in class, while also building familiarity with the EQAO format itself: the online platform, the pacing across two sessions, and the way questions are presented. Preparation does not mean learning a separate EQAO curriculum. It means practising MTH1W skills in the format your child will see on assessment day.
Tutorax’s Grade 9 EQAO Math prep applies that principle directly: a diagnostic identifies each student’s strengths and gaps against the MTH1W expectations, and the sessions that follow are personalized to those results rather than a generic review of the whole course.
What Topics Are Covered in Grade 9 EQAO Math?
The Grade 9 EQAO Math Assessment measures five MTH1W curriculum strands. Reasoning and problem solving are mathematical processes applied across every strand, not a separate topic.

Number
Rational numbers, rates, ratios, percentages and powers. 10 questions, 20% of the assessment.

Algebra
Simplifying expressions, solving equations, and comparing linear and non-linear relations. 18 questions, 36%.

Data
Interpreting tables, graphs and mathematical models. 8 questions, 16%.

Geometry & Measurement
Solving problems involving geometric relationships and measurement. 8 questions, 16%.

Financial Literacy
Percentages, interest, appreciation, depreciation and budgeting. 6 questions, 12%.
Tutoring is adapted to each student’s strengths, learning gaps, and classroom progress.
A structured EQAO Grade 9 math prep program built for Ontario students
Our EQAO Grade 9 Math prep starts with a diagnostic assessment that identifies each student’s strengths and gaps against the MTH1W expectations. A certified tutor connects those results to a detailed study plan that prioritizes the strands and skills needing the most attention, then reinforces them with targeted practice questions. A full digital simulation measures readiness in an EQAO-style environment, and the feedback session that follows turns the results into the student’s final review priorities. The program runs 10 hours, available online in a small group or one-on-one, and includes:
- The full set of Tutorax Grade 9 math preparation workbooks, aligned with the Ontario Curriculum
- 10 hours of live, personalized instruction, offered with a certified tutor
- An initial diagnostic assessment and detailed study plan
- Access to more than 20,000 practice questions, selected according to your child’s grade and identified needs
- A full EQAO-format digital simulation, mirroring the Session A and Session B structure and question formats
- A feedback session on the simulation, with answer explanations and clear next priorities
How to Prepare for Grade 9 EQAO Math
From preparation to feedback, in 3 simple steps
Review the key concepts, backed by preparation workbooks
Guided by the diagnostic results, your tutor reviews the MTH1W strands and skills where your child has the biggest learning gaps, using workbooks built for the EQAO format rather than a generic review of every topic.
Complete a full EQAO-format digital simulation
The simulation reproduces the relevant features of the real assessment, Session A, Session B and the supported question formats, so the EQAO experience feels familiar on assessment day.
Review the simulation and set final priorities
The tutor reviews the simulation results with your child to identify errors, unfinished skills and the final priorities to address before the real assessment.

Grade 9 EQAO Math Tutoring With a Certified Tutor
Review sessions
A certified tutor means accurate instruction and guided feedback: your child never has to guess whether a method is correct or a justification is complete. Sessions are built around the official EQAO framework for the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, with diagnostic results shaping which strands get the most attention, and students get familiar with the digital assessment platform, including the on-screen calculator, before test day.
Tutorax® preparation workbooks
The Tutorax Grade 9 math workbooks give structured curriculum review between sessions: created by teachers and aligned with MTH1W and the Ontario Curriculum, they build on EQAO’s own sample test, released questions and formula sheet. Official resources provide useful examples and familiarity, but on their own they don’t diagnose gaps or explain mistakes. Tutorax adds the diagnosis, instruction, targeted practice, feedback and individualized study plan around them.
Support like no other
Every student and every family deserves clear, consistent support. Over the years, Tutorax has worked with thousands of students across Ontario, and that experience has shaped where our tutors focus feedback, how study plans are structured and what families can expect from the first session through to the final simulation review.

Frequently asked questions
It’s for Ontario students in Grade 9 who are writing the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, whether the goal is to build confidence, meet the provincial standard, or aim for Level 3 or 4. It works just as well for students who are struggling with math as for those who want to aim higher.
Your child works with the same certified tutor throughout the program. Each session follows a clear structure: a focused objective, a worked example, guided practice and independent practice, with the tutor adjusting the pace based on your child’s strengths and areas that need more work.
The assessment measures five MTH1W strands: Number, Algebra, Data, Geometry and Measurement, and Financial Literacy. Algebra includes comparing linear and non-linear relations. Reasoning and problem solving are mathematical processes applied across all five strands rather than a separate category.
It’s an online, multi-stage computer-adaptive assessment on EQAO’s platform, organized into Session A and Session B, each about 60 minutes and made up of two stages. There are 54 questions in total: 50 operational questions that count toward the result and four field-test questions that do not.
Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, the Grade 9 EQAO Math result counts for 20% of a student’s final MTH1W mark, under the Ministry’s updated grading policy for the course.
Your Tutorax Grade 9 math preparation workbook and access to the exercise bank are available as soon as your registration is confirmed, so your tutor can start the diagnostic assessment from the first session.
EQAO’s own sample test, released questions and formula sheet are a great starting point, but they come without guidance. Our program builds a larger practice package around those same official resources, with a certified tutor reviewing every answer, explaining mistakes in the moment, and adjusting the study plan around your child’s specific gaps.
Most students complete the program in 10 hours, spread over several weeks. The exact pace depends on your child’s starting level and how much time is available before their school’s assessment window.
Yes. EQAO provides an on-screen calculator as part of the digital assessment platform for questions where calculator use is permitted, and students can practise with the same tool during Tutorax’s digital simulation.
Yes. EQAO publishes an official formula sheet that students can reference during the assessment. Tutorax’s program reviews it with students in advance so they know exactly which formulas are provided and which they need to know.
Yes. The Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics is a required provincial assessment for students taking MTH1W in Ontario, administered through their school as part of the course.
Results are reported using four achievement levels, and Level 3 represents the provincial standard. Level 4 reflects performance above the standard.
EQAO publishes released questions and an official sample test on its own platform. Tutorax’s program builds a larger practice package around those same official resources, with a certified tutor reviewing every answer.
Yes. Strong classroom grades don’t always translate directly to EQAO’s format and question style. The program helps high-performing students get comfortable with the assessment’s specific expectations and aim confidently for Level 4.
Yes, though the plan will be more focused. In a shorter timeline, the tutor prioritizes the highest-impact concepts and question types based on the diagnostic assessment, rather than covering every topic in equal depth.
Yes. Familiarity is one of the best tools against test anxiety. Practising EQAO-style questions, understanding the digital format in advance, and completing a full simulation before the real assessment all help reduce the unknowns that cause stress.
No program can guarantee an individual result, since outcomes depend on each student’s starting point and effort. What we can guarantee is a structured, certified-tutor-led program shown to help 94% of participating students meet or exceed the provincial standard.
